Our Curriculum

At Kirkstall St Stephens for pupils between the ages of 5 and 7 we follow the programmes of study for Key Stage 1. Similar programmes of study are followed for children aged 7 to 11.

Our children told us that they love learning something new in a challenging and interactive way that makes lessons exciting. They also enjoy being encouraged to “have a go” and being given problems to solve, particularly when they are able to make choices about how to solve them. They want to have a say in what they learn.

Our parents believe that their children learn well through topics, that drama, role play and art are great ways for the children to learn and to share what they have learned with others. They feel it is important to learn social and practical life skills, such as cookery and sewing as well as academic subjects.

The School Governors want our curriculum to value every child, to be inclusive, welcoming and tolerant of all cultures, that every child is treated as an individual.

We want our curriculum to be accessible and challenging for all. The basic literacy and maths skills will be at the heart of our curriculum, combined with an experiential approach (including trips, visitors and theme days) and the use of new technology to ensure that it is fun, exciting, creative and hands-on.

Class/Year Group Curriculum Overviews are found on the class page, in the pupils area, under other information.

IF YOU WOULD LIKE MORE DETAILED INFORMATION ON OUR CURRICULUM PLEASE ASK EITHER YOUR CHILD'S TEACHER OR CONTACT JANET SKELTON IN THE SCHOOL OFFICE, BOTH WILL BE HAPPY TO OBLIGE.
