Year 4

Summer 2
Welcome to Year 4!
Miss Williams
Ms Davies
Miss Lewitt

Welcome back to the last term of the year!

I hope you all had a pleasant break.
We have a jam packed last half term coming up with lots of exciting things to look forward to! On the
14th of July we have our class assembly where we will be sharing all the things we have learnt about our new topic ’Extreme Earth’. This last topic is all about the natural disasters people around the world live through. We will be find out about volcanoes, tornados, earthquakes and tsunamis!

Maths

In Maths we will start off the half term by re-capping written methods we have learnt to multiply. We will then move onto using factors to help multiply larger numbers. Later on in the term we will learn how to find the area and perimeter of 2D shapes. Lastly, we will recap on coordinates and symmetry of 2D shapes. We will also be concentrating on all our times tables in preparation for Year 5.

Please continue to encourage your child to practice their times tables, focusing on the 12, 11, 9, 6 and 7's. The children have all been given their log in details for Times Tables Rockstars (in their homework books). Please encourage your child to go on this as much as possible, I can track their progress via the teacher log in:  https://ttrockstars.com/

English

In English we are starting the new half term by looking at the genre of explanation texts. This ties into our topic of ’Extreme Earth’ as we will be writing about volcanoes and how they come about. In guided reading, we will be exploring the book Journey to Jo’burg.

Later on in the term, we will be writing chronological reports.

Science

The children will continue to briefly look at Living things and their habitats. We will be looking at many animals and their habitats and grouping them dependent on their characteristics. We will also be exploring classification keys to help group living things and looking at how environments changing can pose a threat to animals. We will be taking trips to Kirkstall Abbey and the community garden during our learning!

Our P.E day is now Friday where we will be going down to Kirkstall Leisure Centre's Sports hall. Please ensure your child has their P.E kit in school, children must also ensure they have suitable sports foot wear, trainers or pumps, due to health and safety they will not be able to participate if they don't have them in school.
Our swimming day is Tuesday so please make sure that the children have a full swimming kit on these days.

Mrs Pickard will still be teaching French and R.E on a Thursday afternoon.
Mrs Shakespeare will also be coming in to teach recorders every Tuesday morning.
