Year 4

Autumn 1
Welcome to Year 4!
Miss Williams
Mrs Harding
Mrs McCroakam

Welcome to a brand new year!

I hope you all had a pleasant break.
We have a jam packed first half term coming up with lots of exciting things to look forward to!
Our first topic is Charlie and the Chocolate factory where we will be delving into the world of chocolate which I’m sure the children will love!

Our new exciting topic for this half term is Charlie and the Chocolate factory. It is a fantastic cross-curricular topic bringing in all areas of the curriculum. We will be taste-testing different types of chocolate and creating a bar chart of the children in the class that preferred each type, we will be looking at the history of chocolate and the geography of where cocoa trees are grown as well as deciding on ingredients to go in our very own chocolate bar!

In maths we will be looking at place value and using this knowledge to further our knowledge of formal methods of written calculations. The children will be continuing with their work in mental maths and progressing through their Times Tables, this term focussing on the 4 times and 8 times table. Please continue to encourage you children to practice their Mental Maths skills at home!

Please continue to encourage your child to practice their times tables, focusing on the 12, 11, 9, 6 and 7's. The children have all been given their log in details for Times Tables Rockstars (in their homework books). Please encourage your child to go on this as much as possible, I can track their progress via the teacher log in:

In Literacy we are starting the new term by looking at traditional poetry. We will then move onto looking at our key book, Charlie and the Chocolate factory in greater detail. Finally, we will be writing persuasive letters to Cadbury to persuade them to buy our new design of chocolate bar!

We will also be building on the spellings and grammar learnt i

We will be starting our new topic of ‘states of matter’ this half term. Here, the children will study the properties of liquids, solids and gases and the arrangement of particles in each state. We will also be looking at changes of state and what happens during the water cycle!

Our PE day will be Wednesday this half term. We are going to be focusing on ball skills and coordination skills. We will also be completing a special dance inspired the Oompa Loompas!

In Year 4 the children go swimming on a Tuesday, we walk them down to Kirkstall swimming baths. On this day please ensure that the children come with a full swimming kit, including a towel. Goggles can be brought along but they are not necessary.

Mrs Pickard will still be teaching French and R.E on a Thursday afternoon.
This school is committed to safeguarding and promoting the wellbeing of
all children, and expects our staff and volunteers to share this commitment.
