As part of our mission to ensure that every child becomes a lifelong reader, our high-quality phonics teaching is delivered to Reception and KS1 pupils through systematic synthetic phonics. At KSS we use the Twinkl Phonics scheme. This focusses on the process of decoding whole words by segmenting and blending with the use of visuals, actions and stories. It means that our children are taught to read accurately and fluently and also provides an opportunity for children to form each letter. We regularly assess and monitor our children’s progress. Any children that fall behind are either supported by class-based interventions or are part of our streamlined phonics interventions. When a child is in Year 1 (during the month of June), the Department for Education stipulates that children must undertake the 'Phonics Screening' assessment. If they do not meet the requirements of the assessment, they will retake it the following year. All information is submitted to the Department for Education and you will also receive the relevant information from the school.
