Phonics and Early Reading

Welcome to KSS Phonics and Early reading!

Please see the attached knowledge, skills and vocabulary progression map from Reception to Year 6.

As part of our mission to ensure that every child becomes a life-long reader, our high-quality phonics teaching is delivered to Reception and KS1 pupils through systematic synthetic phonics. At KSS we use the Twinkl Phonics scheme. This focuses on the process of decoding whole words by segmenting and blending with the use of visuals, actions and stories. It means that our children are taught to read accurately and fluently and also provides opportunity for children to form each letter. We regularly assess and monitor our children’s progress, any children that are falling behind are either supported in class based interventions or are part of our stream-lined phonics interventions. When a child is in Year 1 (during the month of June), the Department for Education stipulates that children must undertake the 'Phonics Screening' assessment. If they do not meet the requirements of the assessment, they will retake it the following year. All information is submitted to the Department for Education and you will also receive the relevant information from school.
